Throughout these weeks, following Epiphany, we have been highlighting the fact that with the Incarnation, the Light of God has come into the world. Christ’s light shines in the darkness and scripture reminds us that “the darkness has not overcome it.” At First Presbyterian, we want to underscore the ways that Christ’s light shines through the people, programs, and ministries of our congregation. In the “Book of Order” of the Presbyterian Church USA, our church’s constitution reminds us that one of the purposes of the church is “the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind” (F-1.0304).
Each week in our worship services, the Word of God is both read and proclaimed. The Bible is often referred to as “the Word of God,” because it is a book (actually, a library of 66 separate literary works) that help to reveal God’s nature, character, and the history of God’s care for all of humankind. When we say, “the Word of God,” we also refer to Jesus Christ who is God and came to earth as the ultimate revelation of God’s care for the universe. At First Pres, each week we read scripture together to experience the impact of God’s continued revelation. Our worship service is also centered around a sermon (a proclamation event) in which scripture is explained and creatively discussed, to encourage the people of God (all of you – the church) to live in the light of God’s truth.
My hope is that through scripture reading and sermon messages, each of us might have a better understanding of how much God loves us, how we can share this good news with others, and what opportunities we have to make the world more like God intends. You might wonder, “How can a 10-20 minute message accomplish all of that?” I believe that when the Word of God is faithfully proclaimed, that the Holy Spirit is actively encouraging, convicting, and inspiring listeners. When we hear God’s word, may we walk away changed. I’d love to hear from you about impactful experiences you’ve had related to the proclamation of the word of God. Let me know.
Very truly,
Pastor Adam
