Refreshing Your Spirit in Christ

What ideas or images come to your mind when you hear the word, “refreshment,” dear reader?

Honestly, since marketing has done its job so well, I think of cracking an ice-cold bottle of Coca-Cola. Next, I think of the imagery from the 23rd Psalm. Maybe you think of day at the beach, or by a mountain lake. Perhaps you see yourself laying in a hammock in the cool of the day, shaded by beautiful trees. Our bodies know what it means to be refreshed. At times, our spirits need refreshment as well. That’s why we send notes of encouragement, a phone call to see “how you’re doing,” “you’re in my prayers,” “you’re doing a great job.” Media and marketing regularly reminds us to seek refreshment for our bodies, but our spirits need it as well.

In what ways will you intentionally seek spiritual refreshment during these summer months? A quick google search on the topic provides the following suggestions: prayer, silence, solitude, scripture reading, fasting. We know that in our lives, when we have practiced these disciplines with intentionality, we are blessed. You don’t have to starve yourself or become a monastic hermit to supplement your daily life with a faith practice. Go for a walk (without music or noise) and listen for God’s voice. The beauty of the Black Hills surrounds our daily lives. Take a moment to “soak it in.”

When we find our relationship with God/Christ providing us with stability, grounding, and rejuvenation, we are less likely to seek after temporary solutions. In my life, when I am regularly reminded of WHO I am (my identity) and WHOSE I am (my relationship with God), I am not so easily persuaded toward vice, temptation, or practices that waste money, time, and energy.

It's summer!!! Take a seat in the morning as the breeze ruffles the leaves outside. Go for a walk in the evening and consider how much God has done for you. Take time with a friend to enjoy a cold beverage and a deep conversation that nourishes your spirit. There is time. There is space. Allow God to meet your needs.

Very truly,

Pastor Adam
