Holy Trinity Sunday and Other Stuff

This coming Sunday, June 15 is Holy Trinity Sunday.
This coming Sunday, June 15 is also Father’s Day.
This coming Sunday, our lectionary scripture text will focus us on the Apostle Paul’s words in Romans 5:1-5.
That’s a lot to try to combine in one church service, but I think we can do it! What are your thoughts on the Holy Trinity? The idea that 1+1+1 = 1 (Father + Son + Holy Spirit = God) is always tricky to wrap my brain around. I’m glad that our Reformed Theology allows us to embrace and hold tension amidst mystery and wonder.
For this Holy Trinity Sunday, my hope is that we will be able to imagine and experience, together, the love of God. God cares for us as Eternal Parent, Creator and Sustainer of the universe. God cares for us as Compassionate Friend, who breathed, ate, slept, lived, and died to help humanity understand God’s intention for the universe. God cares for us as Advocate, Comforter, and Guide, dwelling with us, persisting with us in all that our lives on this earth have to offer. God is with you.
For this Father’s Day, I celebrate the joy of caring for children— serving as a mentor, teacher, and companion along the way. I am so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had with my own children in my family. I’m grateful for the times and seasons in life when I was responsible for leading and directing ministries which cultivated opportunities for young people to encounter the grace, love, and forgiveness of God for themselves. I’m grateful for the people in my life, both men and women, who have provided me direction (and re-direction), nurturing, and care.
Our Scripture passage from Romans reminds us that God is at work, living and active, in every occurrence, occasion, or even apparent inconvenience. I am struck and reminded of God’s grace, when I read that, “we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
May God’s rich and endless love provide you all you need for your journey today and tomorrow. See you in church. This Sunday will be a good one!
Very truly,
Pastor Adam
