“What does LOVE have to do with Christmas?”

Joy to the world!” “Peace on earth, good will to all.” “The season of perpetual hope.” The last three weeks in church, we have focused our attention on the manger and we have utilized these big picture concepts of hope, peace, and joy as lenses to see the story in a new light. This coming Sunday, our focus is love. But, I’m wondering – how much does the concept of love play into your Christmas celebrations? Like I’ve mentioned before, the holiday season seems so busy, it’s hard for me to stop and focus. Then this occurred to me: “For God so loved the world, that he sent his only son.”

God sent Jesus to the world because God LOVES us. God gave His son to the world, in order that the world might be saved, and have life through him. We, too, give gifts at Christmas because of the gift that God first gave us. Christmas is about the opportunity each of us are given to encounter God – born in a manger, come to live with us, in order to teach us how to live. Jesus’ life on earth would not be easy. It would not be merry and bright. But He came, lived, suffered, and died so that we might have an example and through that example we might experience “life to the full.” For God so loved the world.

As you celebrate the season, as you give gifts, as you observe family rituals and traditions, I invite you to intentionally make room for love. This is not simply a season to be survived, but an opportunity to be shaped by the presence of the living God. We welcome the birth of God’s son into the world, because of God’s love. May this reality make a difference in your hearts and minds, this year in a new way.

Blessings and love,

Pastor Adam
